ATLANTA - Superintendent Judy Forte is delighted to announce the schedule of events for the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park in celebration of the 93rd birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., beginning Friday, January 14, 2022 and ending on the National King Holiday, Monday, January 17, 2022. Superintendent Forte said, “This has been another challenging year, and through it all, the life and legacy of Dr. King continues to be a source of inspiration, comfort and peace of mind. We invite you to safely participate in our virtual programs and on-site events as we commemorate Dr. King’s 93rd Birthday and the 36th Anniversary of the National King Holiday.”Schedule of Events:
January 14, 10:00 AM – The park will host a virtual birthday celebration honoring Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 93rd Birthday. Elementary schools throughout the State of Georgia have been invited to a special audio book reading by Martin Luther King, III and an entertaining performance by professional storyteller Mama Koku, followed by the cutting of birthday cake.
January 16, 5:00 – 6:00 PM – The park will host a virtual gospel tribute that will be accessible online. Renowned musical celebrities will perform an array of inspirational songs to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King. Mr. Johnathan Slocomb will serve as Master of Ceremonies. January 17, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM – Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, all of the park buildings at Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park will be closed. Some of the gift shops and bookstores will be open. Portable restrooms will be available throughout the park.
The visitor will have the opportunity to walk the park grounds to view the National King Holiday Commemorative Service through a Jumbotron and participate in the March and Rally and service project. Visitors, also, will be able to view the outside of historic structures, relevant exhibits and QR Code videos, experience MARTA’s 1955 Historic Bus, as well as participate in the Junior Ranger and Passport To Your National Parks Cancellation programs.
These events offer opportunities for the park visitor to connect with significant values and beliefs of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. All events are free and open to the public.
