Events for Annual King Remembrance Week

ATLANTA, GA- Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site, Ebenezer Baptist Church, and The King Center will commemorate the annual observance of King Remembrance Week honoring the life and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. April 4-9, 2015, with programs, Birth Home Tours, and a wreath laying ceremony. All events during the week are free of charge and open to the public.

On April 4, 2015, the park will host continuous, silent Birth Home Tours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tours are free but visitors must meet a ranger on the front steps of the Birth Home to begin their tour.

The King Center will host a forum entitled A Moratorium on Violence: It Starts with Me from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Center's Freedom Hall.

Activities will conclude on April 4, at 5:30 p.m. with a wreath-laying ceremony at Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, Heritage Sanctuary. A replica of the 1968 wreath which hung on the Ebenezer Baptist Church sanctuary will be placed by members of the National Park Service and the Ebenezer Baptist Church congregation, in reflection of Dr. King's funeral in Ebenezer Baptist Church. There will be a brief program with special featured remarks by Reverend Dr. Bernice King along with other dignitaries and National Park Service officials before laying the wreath upon the church's fa&#ç;ade at website.

This year marks the 47th anniversary of the death of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King www.nps.gov/malu. Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee and was brought home to be buried in the Sweet Auburn community. "We encourage visitors to partake in the week's programs, including the silent Birth Home Tours, to contemplate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'Jr community roots, his family life, and the congregation that guided and nurtured the future Civil Rights Leader," said Judy Forte Park Superintendent.

The Martin Luther King, s. National Historic Site includes a number of facilities that are operated in partnership including Ebenezer Baptist Church and The King Center. All work together to interpret the places where Martin Luther King, Jr. was born, where he lived, worked, and worshipped and where he is buried, and Dr. King's influence on others.
