ATLANTA- On Friday, September 27, 2019 and Saturday, September 28, 2019 the Martin Luther King, Jr. NHP and the Greening Youth Foundation (GYF) will host the ninth annual Legacy Campout. Since 2010 this program has served 500 youths throughout the Metro-Atlanta area. This year we will engage 75 middle school students in theme programs related to commemorating 400 years since the first African step foot on American soil as slaves, as well as the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
This event serves as a gateway to the outdoors for many of the young people who attend. The Legacy Campout is a free event. Activities will take place on September 27, 2019 from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm and on September 28, 2019 from 7:00 am until 12 noon. All activities will take place at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park.
Camper spaces are filling fast, but there are still a few available. To register as a participant or campout volunteer go to https://www.gyfoundation.org/
Students will be exposed to many aspects of camping; including sleeping at the campsite in tents, as well as making s’mores while having campfire chats and experiencing the historic aspect of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park. They will have nighttime visits to Dr. King’s Birth Home and the park’s visitor center, as well as hearing from park rangers and community leaders around the campfire. On Saturday, September 28, 2019 students will participate in volunteer service projects for National Public Lands Day.
Judy Forte, Superintendent of the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park said “The majority of the students who attend are from communities around Metro Atlanta and may have never had the opportunity to have an authentic camping experience. We will provide them this amazing opportunity which hopefully will inspire further exploration of our national parks and outdoor recreation”.
This event is free and is a part of an ongoing series of public programs offered by the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Park.
