Longfellow House-Washington's Headquarters National Historic Site is pleased to announce free summer activities for families and children, along with a captivating new museum exhibit that explores the Longfellow children’s lives. Together, these initiatives offer immersive experiences that celebrate history and creativity, making the Longfellow House a must-visit destination for families this summer.

"We’re thrilled to welcome families to Longfellow House-Washington's Headquarters National Historic Site this summer," said Site Manager Chris Beagan. "The site’s special programming and new exhibit are designed to spark curiosity and foster a deeper connection to the rich heritage preserved within these walls. It's a wonderful opportunity for families to create lasting memories while exploring history together."

One of the highlights of this summer's offerings is the debut of the special museum exhibit, “’The Patter of Little Feet’: A Longfellow Childhood,” which features toys, clothing, drawings, and more from the site’s museum collection related to the six Longfellow children's early years and growth in Cambridge.

The exhibit offers a deep dive into the lives of some of the young people who inhabited the historic house and the cultural influences that shaped their stories. From personal belongings to archival photographs, visitors have a unique opportunity to explore the layers of history that defined a Longfellow childhood. Learn more about temporary exhibits in the Longfellow House.

Each Saturday morning through September 7, 2024, kids and their grownups are invited to explore community, history, and self-expression outdoors, on the site’s lawn, with special hands-on activities for preschool and elementary-age kids. About Longfellow House-Washington's Headquarters National Historic Site

Longfellow House-Washington's Headquarters National Historic Site preserves a remarkable Georgian house whose occupants shaped the nation. It was a site of colonial enslavement and community activism, George Washington’s first long-term headquarters of the American Revolution, and the place where Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote his canon of 19th-century American literature. Grounds are open daily from dawn to dusk. From May 24 through October 28, 2024, the site is open for free, ranger-led house tours every Friday through Monday. More at www.nps.gov/longfellow
