Past Engagement Opportunities

  • Lewis and Clark National Historical Park Accessibility Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan

An interdisciplinary team, including park and regional staff, identified the key park experiences and evaluated park areas to determine which areas would be evaluated for accessibility needs. The team then developed implementation strategies for improving the accessibility at each location. The plan will guide changes to the way existing services, activities, and programs are provided in multiple locations throughout Lewis and Clark National Historical Park by defining what barriers limit accessibility and providing recommendations on how they can be modified or removed to increase accessibility for all users.

  • National Park Service proposes improvements at the Fort Clatsop Visitor Center

The National Park Service is proposing to rehabilitate the Fort Clatsop Visitor Center and the wastewater system that services the building. The proposed construction would close the Visitor Center for up to six months, likely starting in the fall of 2021. During construction, visitors will continue to be able to access the Fort Clatsop replica and trails. Temporary restrooms, bookstore, and a small visitor center would be located on trailers in the parking lot. The Fort Clatsop Visitor Center at Lewis and Clark National Historical Park was constructed in 1963 and underwent a major expansion in 1991. Many systems are old and need replacement. After construction, visitors can expect to return to a building with improved accessibility, safety, and energy efficiency. The most noticeable differences will be a new front entryway and renovated restrooms. The current septic drainfield that services the Visitor Center is near the end of its useful life. Less than one acre of a 30 to 40 year old forest would be converted into a new septic drainfield, while the current drainfield would be then be reforested. Construction of the new drainfield would likely occur in the fall of 2020, but would not impact the use of the Visitor Center. An Environmental Assessment was conducted to evaluate the impacts of the project on natural resources, cultural resources, and visitors. The public is encouraged to read the Environmental Assessment.
