Meet Tom Smith

April 19, 2018 Posted by: Audrey Sisel
Today we got to meet one of the more boisterous personalities in the office: Tom Smith, the Education Specialist! He works with a wide range of people and organizations, from state departments of education, to the over 100 partners on the trail! In his words, he “promotes opportunities to help teachers teach and learners learn.” He develops new curriculum, youth programming for trail sites, and so much more! On one day, he could be working with administrators at a state department of education, and on another, he may be working with a partner along the trail on creating programming for field trips to their site. One week, he might be visiting a tribal college and training student-teachers, and the next, working with a partner to create service-learning programs for young people.

Often, Tom can be found promoting Honoring Tribal Legacies, which helps teachers introduce tribal perspectives in their math, science, and literacy curricula. As an Education Specialist, he sees his role as one to create opportunities for people to be inspired by their natural and cultural resources, want to learn more about them, and ultimately take ownership to protect them for future generations. "If a kid gets excited about learning, I've done my job!"
