Mule Deer

Rod Goodwin

The Harbor Bay Trail is home to deer, coyotes, rabbits, birds, snakes, and mice. Mule Deer can frequently be found in the canyons and breaks. Mule deer’s defining characteristic are their large ears, which are about three-fourths the length of the head. They have a distinctive black forehead, or mask and a light gray face. In the summer, mule deer are tannish-brown and in the winter are brownish-gray in color. Mule Deer thrive in habitats with a combination of early-stage plant growth, mixed-species plant communities, and diverse and extensive shrub growth.

Harbor Bay Trail provides diverse habitats for these Texas Mammals. Be on the look out for Mule Deer or tracks along the trail. They eat the berries of the lemon sumac bush, which can be found along the sides of the mesas.
