The Canadian River arises in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, northeastern New Mexico, and flows southward, cutting a gorge nearly 1500 ft. deep. It continues through the Texas Panhandle in a valley cut into reddish sandstones. The walls of the Canadian River Valley are known as the "Canadian Breaks."
