NPS Photo People have lived in the Canadian River region of the Texas Panhandle for at least 13,000 years—from early hunter‑gatherers and later explorers and soldiers to ranchers, settlers, and geologists. Some left only faint traces, requiring careful study to understand their lives. Others left a clearer imprint, with prehistoric villages, campsites, historic buildings, artifacts, and written accounts offering vivid insight into their time on the High Plains.
