Rescission of Administrative Order # 26-001
September 2, 2026

Closures, restrictions and public use limits:

Closure Order – Restrictions and Public Use Limits: On July 31, 2026, under the authority provided to the Superintendent in 36 CFR 2.13 (c), all areas within Lava Beds National Monument were closed to the lighting or maintaining of a fire.

Effectively immediately, this restriction is lifted and the regulations pertaining to lighting or maintaining fires now in effect are listed in the 2026 Superintendent’s Compendium.

  • Wood fires are permitted only in metal fire rings within Indian Well Campground.
  • No open fires are permitted in the backcountry, wilderness, or caves. This is ongoing prohibition within the Superintendent Compendium and remains in effect.

Authority: 36 CFR 2.13 (c)

Notice: This administrative order applies to all individuals subject to the regulatory authority of the National Park Service (NPS) within the boundaries of Lava Beds National Monument, including park visitors, government employees, concession employees, park residents and stakeholders.

Finding: The NPS issues this administrative order for the purposes of easing restrictions on the lighting and maintaining fires. Current regulations pertaining to fires are implemented to reduce the chance of wildland fire during the ongoing drought conditions, which can quickly spread to contiguous state and private lands. They also serve to protect the natural and cultural resources of the park.

This order is effective immediately and will remain in effect until further notice. The effectiveness of this order will be assessed on an ongoing basis, and the order will be modified or rescinded when conditions warrant.
