Flowing from the PastOn October 26, 1974, Knife River Indian Villages National Historic site was designated by Congress as a public park to commemorate the culture and history the MHA Nation as well as other Northern Plains tribes. The purpose of Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site is to preserve, protect, and interpret archaeological and natural resources as they relate to cultural and agricultural lifestyles of Northern Great Plains Indian peoples, and to conduct research to further understand how these lifestyles have changed over time. Flowing to the FutureLooking ahead at our next 50 years, we hope to continue and expand the National Park Service mission to preserve unimpaired the natural and cultural resources of the National Park Service for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. Whether you are a community member, a visitor, or a virtual explorer, Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site hopes you will experience and connect with a park that has helped preserve and tell the stories of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara people not only from the past but continue to tell the stories of them today and for generations in the future.
