Curriculum: Archeology & Prairies

Lesson plans in this section are related to the science of archeology, native prairie plants, and prairie restoration. Knife River Indian Villages NHS is a sacred place to Hidatsa tribal members. This is where their ancestors lived, worked, and played. The prairie surrounded these villages and was an integral and spiritual part of everyday life. Archeologists find and study artifacts in a respectful way in conjunction with members of the Mandan Hidatsa Arikara Nation. Knife River Indian Villages NHS created several prairie restoration plots and is actively working to bring back those sections as it was when the ancestors were here.
