CALUMET –The Keweenaw has exceptional history and outdoor recreation opportunities, and you can combine them with the Step into History program offered by Keweenaw NHP and the Western UP Health Department. This Thanksgiving, the Step into History program will join UP Health System-Portage for its annual 5k Turkey Trot event in Hancock, where you can discover how you can explore industrial sites and neighborhoods while staying active at places like Adventure Mining Company, Central Mine Historic District, Old Victoria, and Quincy Mine Hoist Association before you begin earning that extra piece of pumpkin pie!

The Turkey Trot is open to walkers and runners, and is a great event for the whole family. Meet in the front lobby of UP Health System-Portage in Hancock to register. (You can also register online at www.portagehealth.org/our-services/fitness-center/events/turkeytrot-- the first 100 to register get a free t-shirt!). After a brief word about how you can stay active across Keweenaw historic landscapes, participants will head out on Portage Drive, then east onto Ingot to connect with the Hancock/Calumet trail. Participants will continue on the trail until Tomasi Road where they will loop around to finish at the hospital. Snacks and refreshments will be served in the lobby afterwards.

On Friday we encourage you to take a break and #OptOutside at one of our amazing heritage sites where you can find many ways to be active! Show us where you went to #OptOutside on Black Friday by tagging @KeweenawNPS on Instagram.

This event is the 15th in a series of Step Into History activities hosted by Keweenaw NHP and the WUPHD and is made possible by a grant from the National Park Foundation’s Active Trails program. Keweenaw was one of 25 national parks chosen to receive a 2016 Active Trails grant and, in partnership with the health department, is hosting 15 walks and other healthy activities throughout 2016.
