Contact: Kathleen Harter, (906) 337-3168 Join local historian Nick Faller as he explores the military history of Michigan's Copper Country, from the founding of Fort Wilkins through World War II. Faller has been a student of Copper Country history for over 50 years, and has focused his research on the contributions its residents have made in military service to their country. His talk will provide a broad overview of this topic from the 1840s to the end of World War II. He will also highlight the return to the Copper Country from Europe of veterans of the First World War, the Copper Country's Naval Militia, and Houghton County's only recipient of Medal of Honor, U.S. Marine Albert Joseph Smith. This event will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 28th, 2009 at the Michigan Army National Guard Readiness Center, which is located at 57707 Military Avenue in Calumet. It is part of the Fourth Thursday in History speaker series sponsored by Keweenaw National Historical Park. The Fourth Thursday in History series arranges public presentations on important aspects of Copper Country and regional history, including techniques for historic preservation. Presentations are scheduled in venues throughout the Keweenaw Peninsula, particularly at historic sites associated with specific topics. They are free and open to the public.
