Picnic Areas

A woman and man sit at a picnic table on a grassy surface. They sit with their backs towards us and face a view of Mount Katahdin in the distance. It is a sunny blue sky day with patchy clouds in the sky.
Enjoy a snack with a view at the Katahdin Loop Road Overlook.

NPS/Gin Majka

Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument has three designated picnic areas that are available for use on a first-come, first-served basis. These picnic areas (Katahdin Loop Road Overlook, Lunksoos Boat Launch, and Oxbow Picnic Area) offer a place to enjoy a meal or a snack and relax with a scenic view.
There are picnic tables and a vault toilet at each picnic location. Don’t forget to pack in your own water. There is no potable water within monument boundaries. For more information and photos of each location, look below.

Quick Tips:

  • Practice Leave No Trace principles. Pack in and pack out.
  • Never feed the wildlife and do not leave food unattended. Keep all food, garbage, or smelly items in your vehicle when not in use so that animals cannot access them.
  • Bring your own camp stove. There are no grills at the picnic sites.
  • The picnic sites are exposed to the elements. Bring your own sun protection and bug protection.
  • Speaking of bugs, it can be extremely buggy! Biting and stinging insects are typical during the late spring and summer months. It is highly recommended to bring bug repellent and wear long-sleeved shirts and pants as a layer of protection. A mosquito net could also be helpful for longer stays.
