Field trip programs to the monument are typically offered starting from mid-September. NPS rangers provide expert knowledge in creating interactive and informative experiences for students. They encourage active participation, asking students to observe, analyze, and draw connections between the concepts they learn in the classroom and real-world phenomena. Each field trip program consists of three parts (pre-site, on-site, post-site):
- Pre-site visit: A ranger visits your classroom with a 30-45 minute introductory lesson that includes safety and field trip expectations.
- On-site field trip: A ranger-led program at Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. The field trips are typically 2-3 hours long.
- Post-site classroom lesson: A conclusion activity that evaluates what students learned during the field trip.
