Lake View Visitor Center

Parking / Drop Off

Parking:

• 4 accessible spaces (2 are van-accessible spaces)
• 3 oversized spots for school bus or RV
• 56 regular spaces

Drop Off:

• There is no designated drop off area.
• There are multiple lowered sections from the parking lot to sidewalk near acessible parking.

Restrooms

Restrooms with power operated doors are in the lower level of the visitor center, accessed by elevator or stairs.              

Men:

• 1 accessible stall
• 1 standard stall
• 1 urinal
• An extended counter next to the sinks that can be used as a changing table
• Sinks and hand dryers

Women:

• 1 accessible stall
• 2 standard stalls
• An extended counter next to the sinks that can be used as a changing table
• Sinks and hand dryers

Paths

• Concrete sidewalk from the parking lot to the Visitor Center entrance.
• Sidewalk is on a slight downhill slope.

Wheelchairs

• One wheelchair is available for loan at the Visitor Center, free of charge.
• Please inquire at the front desk.
• There is an elevator available to move between the first a second floors.

Inside the Visitor Center

Information Desk:

• There is an information desk on the right after you enter the doors.
• There is a lowered section for asking questions and purchasing items from the bookstore.

Bookstore:

• There are various items available for sale including t-shirts, hoodies, books, pins, and other collectibles.
• Staff at the information desk can assist with reaching items on higher shelves.

Theater:

• The park film is 35 minutes in length.
• It is shown at 15 minutes past the hour (9:15, 10:15, 11:15, 12:15, 1:15, 2:15, 3:15, 4:15).
• There is accessible seating and space for wheelchairs at the back of the theater.

Exhibits

• Throughout the visitor center there is a large model, area map and audio exhibit.
• There is room to navigate a wheelchair around the exhibits.
• There is an elevator available to move between the first a second floor exhibits.

 

North Abutment

A viewpoint at what would have been the north side of the South Fork Dam.

Parking

• 1 van-accessible space
• 6 regular spaces

Path

There is path made of asphalt, leading into composite and wooden boardwalk that connects the parking to the viewpoint.

This path is:

• 5 feet wide
• 1,186 feet (.22 miles) or tenths of a mile) long
• Average running slope: 2 degrees
• Max running slope:  3 degrees
• Average cross slope: 1 degree
• Max cross slope:  1 degree

Restrooms

• There are no restrooms at the North Abutment.
• Closest restrooms are in the Visitor Center.

 

South Abutment

A viewpoint at what would have been the south side of the South Fork Dam.

Parking

• 2 accessible spaces by the vault toilet (1 being a van-accessible space)
• 25 standard spaces

Path

There is a grass path that leads from the parking out to the viewpoint. The natural ground is often uneven.

This path is:

• 14 feet wide
• 290 feet (or tenths of a mile) long
• Average running slope: 1 degree
• Max running slope: 1 degree
• Average cross slope: 0 degree
• Max cross slope: 0 degree

Restrooms

• There is a single-user vault toilet near the parking lot.
• There is no running water at this location.

 

South Fork Hunting and Fishing Club House

Parking

There is a small gravel parking lot located to the right side of the clubhouse.

• There are no parking lines painted on the gravel.
• No designated accessible parking.
• There is excess parking on the grass around the gravel lot.

Path

There is a ramp near the gravel parking lot for visitors who wish to walk around on the front porch.

Inside the Club House

• There is a high threshold between the front door and inside the building.
• The first floor is accesible by wheelchair.
• The bulding has 3 floors and no elevator.

 

Trails

Carriage Road Trail

The Carriage Road Trail leads from the top of the South Abutment parking lot to South Abutment road. 

• This trail can be accessed by parking at the South Abutment.
• Foot traffic only.

Nature Trail

The Nature Trail leads from the top of the South Abutment parking lot to South Abutment road.

Path of the Flood Trail

The Path of the Flood Trail starts in Johnstown Flood National Memorial, passes through Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site and ends at the Stone Bridge in Johnstown.

• This trail can be accessed by parking at the South Abutment.
• Foot & bike traffic only.
• For details about the POTF Trail outside the park, please visit the Cambria County Conservation and Recreation Authority website.

The 9/11 Bike Trail

• This trail enters the park here and and exits the park through the middle of the dam abutments.
• Visit 9/11trail.org for more information on the trails sections outside of the park.
• The trail section within Johnstown Flood National Memorial can be accessed by parking at the Visitor Center.
• This trail is shared with the Path of the Flood Trail.
• There are rest areas with benches along the trail.
• Foot and bike traffic.

There is a comfort station near the parking lot of the picnic area that consists of:

• Single user vault toilet
• No running water

Picnic Tables

• There are 14 picnic tables scattered in the grass.
• There are 5 picnic tables under the pavillion.
• There is 1 wheelchair accessible picnic table.
