Wetlands, Marshes and Swamps

Wetlands are areas where water covers the soil. The wetlands at the park are considered an inland, or non-tidal wetland. These can be found along rivers, streams, and areas that experience flooding. Dry land surrounds these wetland areas. The time that the soil is covered can vary. In some wetlands, soil is covered all year, or part of the year. About seven acres of the historic, former lakebed at Johnstown Flood National Memorial are wetlands, dominated by wetland plants such as cattails and black willows. Wetlands have many important functions, including improving the quality of water. They can also support and provide habitat for a diverse array of aquatic insects and other wildlife.
