At this time, research is ongoing to provide a more complete biography of James B. White. He was associated with James B. White and Company, manufacturer of manganese ore.
In regards to involvement in manganese ore, the following comes from: Thomas Leonard Watson, Granites of the Southeastern Atlantic States, Bulletin No. 426, U.S. Department of the Interior, United States Geological Survey (Washington: Government Printing Office, 1907):
"The year 1867 also marked the opening of the Crimora mine in the valley of Virginia. It was worked by a stock company for several years; then operations were suspended and until 1882 only occasional small quantities were mined. In 1882 it was leased by James B. White & Co. of Pittsburg [sic] and operations were begun on a large scale. Later it was acquired by the American Manganese Company."
