Service Animals

 
Service animals are allowed at Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. For a definition of a service animal, please see the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) definition.

Anywhere that you wish to go in our park, your service animal may go, too.

Barataria Preserve

  • Water

    • Potable water is available at the Barataria Preserve Visitor Center and the Barataria Preserve Education Center.
  • Waste

    • Trashcans are available at the beginning of each trail and at the Visitor Center. There are no plastic bags provided, so please remember to bring your own.
  • Wildlife

    • Be extra cautious of wildlife at the Barataria Preserve such as alligators, snakes, and insects (spiders, ticks, etc.).
  • Extreme Conditions

    • Louisiana experiences extreme heat. Bring extra water for your service animal.
    • Some trails are elevated boardwalks, so be cautious of fall hazards for service animals.

Chalmette Battlefield

  • Water

    • Potable water is available at the Chalmette Battlefield Visitor Center.
  • Waste

    • Trashcans are available at the Chalmette Battlefield Visitor Center and restrooms. There are no plastic bags provided, so please remember to bring your own.
  • Wildlife

    • Please be aware of snakes, coyotes, and alligators when walking the grounds at Chalmette Battlefield and Chalmette National Cemetery.
  • Extreme Conditions

    • Louisiana experiences extreme heat. Bring extra water for your service animal.
    • There is scheduled black powder demonstrations, which may be startling to service animals. To view our schedule, visit our Calendar.

French Quarter Visitor Center

  • Water

    • Potable water is available at the French Quarter Visitor Center. There are water fountains available to the public in the courtyard.
  • Waste

    • Trashcans are available outside the restrooms in the courtyard. There are no plastic bags provided, so please remember to bring your own.
  • Extreme Conditions

    • Louisiana experiences extreme heat. Bring extra water for your service animal.

Acadian Cultural Center

  • Water

    • Potable water is available at the water fountains in the visitor center lobby.
  • Waste

    • Trashcans are available around the parking lot. There are no plastic bags provided, so please remember to bring your own.
  • Wildlife

    • Be extra cautious of wildlife at the Acadian Cultural Center such as alligators and snakes.
  • Extreme Conditions

    • Louisiana experiences extreme heat. Bring extra water for your service animal.

Prairie Acadian Cultural Center

  • Water

    • The Prairie Acadian Cultural Center is currently closed. However, programming is offered off-site. Check our Current Conditions page for more information and updates.
    • Potable water is available at the water fountains in the visitor center lobby.
  • Waste

    • A trashcan is available outside the front entrance. There are no plastic bags provided, so please remember to bring your own.

Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center

  • Water

    • Potable water is available at the Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center's lobby water fountain.
  • Waste

    • Trashcans are available around the parking lot and the front building entrance. There are no plastic bags provided, so please remember to bring your own.
  • Wildlife

    • Be extra cautious of wildlife at the Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center such as alligators and snakes. In addition, be aware of poison ivy on the grounds.
  • Extreme Conditions

    • Louisiana experiences extreme heat. Bring extra water for your service animal.
