Chalmette Battlefield Memorial Illumination Driving Tour

A light shines for every loss on that fateful winter morning.

The Chalmette Battlefied is honored to host its first Memorial Illumination driving tour, a special celebration as a part of America 250. The Battle of New Orleans was a pivitol moment for the United States, and the world, and its outcome shaped America's identity on the world stage. During 30 minutes of fighting, both sides experienced heavy loss. More than 2,100 comemoritive lanters, or luminaria, will be placed on the battlefield honoring the casualties of the Battle of New Orleans 211 years ago.

Important Information regarding the driving tour:

  • The event will take place during the the evening of Saturday, January 10th, 2026.
  • The gates of the park will open from 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM for visitors to drive the tour road.
  • The tour is nonstop, driving only. No parking, or walking will be permitted.
  • During the Illumination, park facilities like the visitor center and restrooms will closed.
  • The Chalmette National Cemetery will not be accessible during this time.
