James A. Garfield National Historic Site in Mentor is pleased to announce an upcoming author program and book signing by Dr. Brian Matthew Jordan, author of A Thousand May Fall: An Immigrant Regiment's Civil War (Liveright/W.W. Norton, 2021). The presentation will be in the site’s visitor center auditorium at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 10.

A Thousand May Fall focuses on the Civil War experiences of the 107th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, a regiment made up largely of ethnic Germans. The regiment fought in several important battles, including Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. However, they were rarely lauded for their courage but instead set apart by their language and identity and regularly questioned by a nativist Northern press.

Brian Matthew Jordan is a native of Akron, Ohio.  He earned a Ph.D. in History from Yale University in 2013 and is now Assistant Professor of History at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas.  He is also the author of Marching Home: Union Veterans and Their Unending Civil War, a finalist for the 2016 Pulitzer Prize in History. Doctor Jordon serves as the Book Review Editor for The Civil War Monitor and is a member of the Society of Civil War Historians. He previously spoke at James A. Garfield National Historic Site in 2018.

“We are honored and excited to welcome Dr. Jordan back to James A. Garfield National Historic Site,” said Acting Site Manager Allison Powell.  “His book A Thousand May Fall is an incredible piece of scholarship that adds much to our understanding of how immigrant soldiers experienced the Civil War. We invite everyone to come and enjoy what promises to be a fascinating and enlightening program.”

The presentation by Dr. Brian Matthew Jordan will be free of charge.  Copies of the book will be for sale in the site’s Eastern National bookstore, and the author will sign books after the program.
