The National Park Service staff of James A. Garfield National Historic Site in Mentor is pleased to announce its third of four free outdoor concerts this summer.
At 2 p.m. this Saturday, August 5, the site will host the Lake Effect Concert Band, part of the Snowbelt Musical Arts Association in Chardon. This is an all-volunteer community concert band that provides enjoyable, lifelong learning opportunities for musicians and entertaining concert experiences for audiences of all ages. The band is familiar with numerous marches and patriotic songs of the last 150 years, including many the Garfields knew and enjoyed.
Those attending are invited to bring lawn chairs, drinking water, sunscreen, and anything else needed for personal comfort. Picnic baskets are welcomed; alcoholic beverages are not permitted.
This year’s outdoor summer concert series is sponsored by The James A. Garfield Alliance, a nonprofit partner of the site. Additional support is provided by The Garfield Trail of Ohio, another local nonprofit partner.
“James A. Garfield National Historic Site is a great place to take in live music,” said Site Manager Todd Arrington. “Historically, music was played on the grounds here several times during James Garfield’s 1880 presidential campaign. We’re excited to welcome the Lake Effect Concert Band back for another great performance.”
James A. Garfield National Historic Site is located at 8095 Mentor Avenue (U.S. 20) in Mentor, Ohio, approximately 25 miles east of Cleveland. The site offers guided tours of the Garfield home, museum exhibits, two outdoor cell phone tours, and an introductory film. The National Park Service completely restored the house in the late 1990s, making it one of the most impressive presidential homes preserved for the public.
