Have some fun this fall by volunteering at the Indiana Dunes Apple Festival. Volunteers are needed to help out at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore’s historic Chellberg Farm on the weekend of September 16 and 17. No experience or expertise on apples is needed. All training will be provided.

The National Park Service, Dunes Learning Center, and Friends of Indiana Dunes partnered up last year to present the first Apples Festival as part of the year-long celebration of the national lakeshore’s 50th anniversary. It was so successful, drawing well over 2,000 people, that it will now be an annual event.

Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks during the festival and can work shifts as short as three hours. Help is needed greeting and directing visitors, assisting people on and off the hay wagon ride, planting apple trees, making apple butter and cider, demonstrating traditional farm crafts, and showing children how to play old-time games and make simple crafts.

If you would like to help, please contact the festival’s volunteer coordinator JP Anderson at 219-395-1848 or e-mail us. For more information on this or other programs at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, call 219-395-1882 or visit our website at www.nps.gov/indu and our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/IndianaDunesNL.
