Module 201: Identifying and Removing Bias from Interpretive and Educational Programming

Curriculum
The following curriculum component outlines the developmental learning elements for this module. From this outline, 1) employees and their supervisors can determine learning needs and strategies, 2) instructors can develop sessions and lesson plans.

Objectives
After completing this module, learners will be able to:

  • Develop a rationale for presenting "bias-free" programs, and be able to defend it on a psychological, social, and cultural basis;

  • Cite three things they can do to ensure that the programs they present are free from bias.

Topics
Identifying and Removing Bias from Interpretation, prejudice, stereotypes, interpersonal communication, exhibits and printed materials, strategies for removing bias, rationale for removing bias.

Audience
All interpretive park rangers, permanent, term and seasonal, volunteers, association and concession employees, and park partner employees.

Delivery
Classroom, lab, park or cluster level training, mentoring, independent study, university sources

Target
Within two years of appointment.
