Harry S Truman National Historic Site Announces Holiday Schedule

Harry S Truman National Historic Site Superintendent Larry Villalva has announced holiday hours for the 2008 season. The Truman Home and the visitor center in Independence will be closed for Christmas Day on Thursday, December 25 and on Friday, December 26. As has been presidential custom in the past, President Bush has issued an Executive Order releasing executive branch employees from duty on Friday. The park will also be closed for New Year’s Day on Thursday, January 1, 2009. The visitor center and the Truman Home will reopen on Saturday, December 27 and Friday, January 2 respectively, resuming normal business hours.

Thirty minute tours of the Truman Home are offered Tuesday through Sunday, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Tickets are required and are available on a first come, first served basis at the visitor center at 223 N. Main Street in Independence. Tour group size is limited to eight people per tour. Admission is $4.00 for adults; children under 16 are free. No tours are offered on Mondays from Labor Day to Memorial Day weekend. The visitor center is open daily 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. A free 12- minute introductory audio-visual program about Mr. Truman and his life in Independence is shown regularly.
