Basic Information

Honouliuli National Historic Site is the location of the largest and longest-run incarceration and internment site in the Hawaiian Islands during WWII. The park service maintains and preserves 123 acres of the camp. It is located on the island of O‘ahu within the state of Hawai‘i, in the Pacific West Region of the National Park Service.

The camp's location was at the bottom of a gulch in the Wai‘anae mountains where prisoners would be isolated from the outside world. Honouliuli stream runs through the center of the valley.

The camp was bisected by a sugar plantation-era aqueduct, separating over 4,000 prisoners of war from the over 400 American civilians held there.

Honouliuli National Historic Site is currently closed to the general public as the park service does not own any land that connects the park to public roads. Please check back frequently to learn about future opportunities with our park, or check our Plan Your Visit page for places to visit to learn more about the camp, or refer to our Historical Overview and associated pages.
