The Meaning of Names Author Karen Gettert Shoemaker to Appear at Homestead National Monument of America
Family History Month will be celebrated at Homestead National Monument of America on Sunday, October 16, 2016 with a presentation by Karen Gettert Shoemaker, author of the historical novel The Meaning of Names. This event will begin at 2 p.m. at the Education Center, and the author will read from her novel and discuss how she uses family stories and historic research in her work.

Join park rangers and volunteers for the Hedge Apple Festival on Sunday, October 9, 2016 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Homestead National Monument of America to have fun with hedge apples! This fun event will begin with hedge apple crafts and games at 2:00 p.m. at the Homestead Heritage Center. See who creates the most exciting and unique creation using the provided hedge apples and craft supplies! After that, kids and visitors of all ages can join in on the Homestead Hedge Apple Games, a series of fun activities outside near the Palmer-Epard Cabin. Games will include a hedge apple on a spoon race, hedge apple bucket toss, and more! This event is free and offers exciting fun for the whole family!

Bee BioBlitz – A Centennial Celebration of Biodiversity in the National Park Service
Help discover the species of bees that inhabit Homestead National Monument of America by joining rangers during the Bee BioBlitz on Sunday, October 2, 2016.
To celebrate 100 years of stewardship, the National Park Service is planning a shared Nation-wide quest to discover and document biodiversity – the variety of living organisms in a place. You are invited to be part of the National Park Service Centennial celebration during this engaging event to discover the biodiversity of bees within YOUR national parks.

Fall Deer Survey Provides Public Lands Day Volunteer Opportunity at Homestead National Monument of America
On Saturday, September 24, 2016 from 9:30 a.m. – noon, Homestead National Monument of America will participate in National Public Lands Day by offering the public the opportunity to help conduct a fall deer survey. Meet at Homestead’s Education Center and help the monument staff count deer during this exciting centennial year! No experience is needed; just show up for a 9:30 a.m. orientation; wear long pants, long sleeved shirt, good walking shoes, and a coat appropriate for the weather. You can be a walker or a counter - the walkers will hike approximately 3/4 of a mile through the prairie – which happens to be the oldest tallgrass prairie restoration project in the National Park Service! Those who do not desire or are unable to walk that far are needed to watch monument boundaries and count deer as they exit. The survey will be completed by noon. Motorists on State Highway 4 need to be alert for deer crossing the highway as they drive through the monument on the morning of Saturday, September 24, 2016.

Celebrate the Centennial with Artist-In-Residence Lindsy Davis at Homestead National Monument of America
Artist-in-Residence Lindsy Davis, a paper and printmaker, will be at Homestead National Monument of America October 3 - 17, 2016. Davis will give a special presentation on papermaking on Sunday, October 9, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at the Homestead Education Center. Davis has a passion for working from the ground up. Her background in papermaking, woodblock printmaking, farming, drawing, and sculpture will help her explore a series regarding landscape prints on the landscape itself. She has led lectures and demonstrations on woodblock printmaking and papermaking.

Hours Changing at Homestead National Monument of America
Fall, winter, and spring operating hours will begin at Homestead National Monument of America, starting on Tuesday September 6, 2016, the monument will be open daily Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Along with the changing winter hours, the monument will offer a wide variety of upcoming daily programs.

Prepare for Totality at Homestead National Monument of America
Homestead National Monument of America will be the perfect venue for the August 21, 2017 total solar eclipse. At Homestead totality is expected to last 2 minutes 37 seconds.
To learn more about the 2017 solar eclipse, Homestead National Monument of America will be hosting a special presentation by solar eclipse expert and enthusiast Derryl Barr. The program will take place at the Homestead Education Center on August 25, 2016 starting at 1 p.m.
