Field Trips to Mound City Group

Planning your Field Trip

You can schedule a field trip to Hopewell Culture National Historical Park! A visit to the park is a great way to immerse you students in Native American history from 2,000 years ago. Field trips include a ranger-guided tour of Mound City Group, hands-on activities exploring Hopewell daily life, and atlatl demonstration and practice. All field trip programs are free.

Special Note: We schedule field trips on Tuesdays through Friday's September through November and April through May when staffing is available. Field trips to Mound City Group are limited to 50 students and 5 staff/chaperones in 1 bus and/or 5 cars. You may submit additional requests for different time blocks if needed. Field trips are 2 hours in length and can be scheduled for either 9:30 - 11:30 OR 11:30 - 1:30. You may picnic and/or shop on your own after or before 11:30, depending on your selected time block. Please let us know if you plan to do this so we are sure to have picnic and shopping space for you. Bring you lunches in a box or tub so they can be off-loaded from the bus. Rangers will assist with storing lunches in the visitor center. Students should not carry their lunch bags during their field trip.

Chaperones:

Parking at the Mound City Group visitor center is extremely limited. You can help us with this busy parking lot by limiting the number of chaperones and their cars. Chaperones are not required for your visit at Mound City Group. Please make sure you have the adequate staff you need to make sure all students needs and abilities are met.

Additional Notes:

  • Most activities including lunch, take place outdoors. Dress accordingly. No flip flops or sandals. No open toed shoes. Dress in layers.
  • There is a lot of walking. The tour length is approximately one mile plus the walking between activities.
