WEST BRANCH, IOWA— Herbert Hoover’s spiritual upbringing guided his long career as a humanitarian, public servant, and statesman. The historic Friends Meetinghouse at Herbert Hoover National Historic Site, which helps tell that part of his life’s story, will get new roof shingles this summer. The building will be fenced off and closed to visitors during the re-roofing, which will start on Monday, August 9. The park will re-open the Meetinghouse upon completion of the project around Friday, September 3. The Society of Friends, or Quakers, built the meetinghouse in 1857. Restored based on photographs, recollections, and research, the Friends Meetinghouse appears like it did during Herbert Hoover’s childhood when he and his family attended silent meetings in it. It reopened in 1965 as part of Herbert Hoover National Historic Site. Herbert Hoover National Historic Site and the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum are in West Branch, Iowa at exit 254 off I-80. Both are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Time. Parking is limited so please allow extra time to find a parking space.
