Drive Maunaloa Road

Driving Maunaloa Road offers a scenic and unique experience through Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. The road begins off Highway 11 and climbs steadily toward the Maunaloa Lookout, providing access to lush forests, volcanic landscapes, and high-elevation views. The single lane road is paved and suitable for two-wheel drive vehicles, but it is narrow and winding, so drivers should proceed with caution.

Start your visit by checking in at the Kīlauea Visitor Center for current road conditions, weather updates, and safety information. Then enjoy a leisurely 1 hour drive up Maunaloa Road, with opportunities to stop and take in the dramatic changes in landscape along the way.

Be prepared for cooler temperatures, potential rain or fog, and limited facilities. Bring sturdy shoes, water, snacks, layers, and a map if you plan to explore beyond your vehicle.
