Hawaiʻi National Park, HI - Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park continues its tradition of sharing Hawaiian culture and After Dark in the Park programs with the community and visitors throughout December. These programs are free, but park entrance fees apply. Mark your calendars for these upcoming events:

 

Coral Road: The Poetry of Garrett Hongo. Garrett Hongo's long-awaited third collection of poems continues his literary explorations into the history of the impermanent homeland his immigrant ancestors found in Hawaiʻi. Join the Volcano native and acclaimed poet for an intimate, exhilarating, and soul-searching evening. Copies of Coral Road will be available for sale, and the author will sign copies upon request. Part of Hawaiʻi Volcanoesʻ ongoing After Dark in the Park series. Free.

The Kuahiwis Live in Concert. Back by popular demand, the Kuahiwis bring their special blend of Hawaiian music, hula, and family deeply rooted in the volcanic soil of Hawaiʻi. Join T.R. Ireland, Kiliona Young, and Grant Kaʻauʻa as they blend classic songs of their upbringing with modern rhythms and melodies of today. Copies of their award-winning CD, Hawaiian Music, will be available for sale. Part of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes' ongoing After Dark in the Park series. Free.

Kalo. Join Sam and Edna Buldado as they share their knowledge and cultural uses of the kalo (taro) plant. Kalo is highly significant to Hawaiians, and is used for many things, including food, medicine, glue, and dyes. Part of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes' ongoing ʻIke Hana Noʻeau "Experience the Skillful Work" workshops. Free.

John Keawe Live in Concert. Award-winning slack-key (kīhōʻalu) guitarist, composer and recording artist, John Keawe, brings his warm, original style of music to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park for the holidays. His wife Hope provides moving interpretations of his music with her graceful hula. This program is expected to be well attended, so come early for seating. John's CDs and DVDs will be available for purchase. Part of Hawaiʻi Volcanoesʻ ongoing After Dark in the Park series. Free.

Hula and Mele with Haunani's Hula Expressions. Come sing along to your favorite Hawaiian melodies with this award-winning group of lively elders, or kūpuna, who sing and dance hula to the sweet sound of hapa haole music, and make all of their own costumes and lei. Part of Hawaiʻi Volcanoesʻ ongoing Nā Leo Manu "Heavenly Voices" series of cultural programs. Free.

ʻUkulele with Oral Abihai. Join Oral Abihai as he shares his passion for making ʻukulele from discarded or naturally fallen pieces of wood. Learning only several years ago in Lahaina from Kenny Potts, he has since made more than 50 ʻukulele. Part of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes' ongoing ʻIke Hana Noʻeau "Experience the Skillful Work" workshops. Free.
