August 2026 Notice of Flight Operations

HAWAII NATIONAL PARK, Hawaiʻi – Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park announces flight operations for August 2026:  

August 6 between 6:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. for ʻuaʻu (Hawaiian petrel) monitoring on Mauna Loa between 4,000- and 9,000-ft. elevation. 

August 10, 11, and 12 between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. for composting toilet maintenance and cleaning at the Halapē and Keauhou backcountry sites.   

August 11 and 26 between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. for feral ungulate survey and control within the Kahuku Unit between 2,000- and 7,000-ft. elevation. 

August 31 between 6:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. for ʻuaʻu (Hawaiian petrel) monitoring on Mauna Loa between 4,000- and 9,000-ft. elevation. 

USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory may conduct additional flight operations over Kīlauea and Mauna Loa to assess volcanic activity and maintain instrumentation.  

The park regrets any noise impact to residents and park visitors. Dates and times are subject to change based on aircraft availability and weather.  

Management of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park requires the use of aircraft to monitor and research volcanic activity, conduct search-and-rescue missions and law enforcement operations, support management of natural and cultural resources, and to maintain backcountry facilities.
