December 2025 Notice of Flight Operations

HAWAII NATIONAL PARK, Hawaiʻi – Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park announces flight operations for December 2025. 

December 1 and 4 between 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. for native plant monitoring in the southwest coastal backcountry between sea level and 2,500-ft. elevation.

December 3 between 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. for ungulate survey in the Kaʻū desert between 2000- and 4,000-ft. elevation.  

December 8 between 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. for native plant monitoring in the East Rift Zone between 1,500- and 3,000-ft. elevation.

Dec 16 & 18 between 6 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for Hawaiian petrel monitoring on Mauna Loa between 4,000 and 9,000-ft. elevation.

December 17 between 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. to support planting of native species in the Kahuku Unit between 2,000- and 3,000-ft. elevation.

USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory may conduct additional flight operations over Kīlauea and Mauna Loa to assess volcanic activity and maintain instrumentation. 

The park regrets any noise impact to residents and park visitors. Dates and times are subject to change based on aircraft availability and weather. 

Management of the park requires the use of aircraft to monitor and research volcanic activity, conduct search-and-rescue missions and law enforcement operations, support management of natural and cultural resources, and to maintain backcountry facilities.
