HAWAII NATIONAL PARK, Hawaiʻi – Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park announces flight operations for July 2025:
Note: this news release was updated to include a corrected date for training at Mauna Loa Quarry.

July 1, 29 & 31 between 6:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. for ʻuaʻu (Hawaiian petrel) monitoring on Mauna Loa between 4,000- and 9,500-ft. elevation.

July 8 between 6 a.m. and 11 a.m. for ungulate survey at Kahuku Unit between 2,000- and 6,000-ft. elevation and for survey and control of banana poka on Mauna Loa between 3,800- and 6,800-ft. elevation.

July 9 between noon and 2 p.m. for aviation training at Mauna Loa Quarry at the 3,900-ft. elevation.

July 9 between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. for invasive guinea grass control work in the coastal backcountry from sea level to 2,400-ft. elevation.

July 14 between 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. for external sling loads that include equipment, tools and camping gear to Halape shelter to remove hazardous waste and to install a public water tank, between 50- and 3,000-ft. elevation.

July 23 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for aviation training at Mauna Loa Quarry at the 3,900-ft. elevation.

USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory may conduct additional flight operations over Kīlauea and Mauna Loa to assess volcanic activity and maintain instrumentation. 

The park regrets any noise impact to residents and park visitors. Dates and times are subject to change based on aircraft availability and weather. 

Management of the park requires the use of aircraft to monitor and research volcanic activity, conduct search-and-rescue missions and law enforcement operations, support management of natural and cultural resources, and to maintain backcountry facilities.
