HAWAII NATIONAL PARK, Hawaiʻi – Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park announces flight operations for June 2025:

June 9, 12, 24, 26, and 30 between 6 a.m. and 1 p.m. for ʻuaʻu (Hawaiian petrel) monitoring on Mauna Loa between 4,000- and 9,000-ft. elevation.

June 9 and 16 between 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., for external sling loads including equipment, tools, and camping gear to Halapē shelter for hazardous waste removal, composting toilet maintenance, trail brushing, and campsite maintenance between 5 and 3,000 feet above ground level (AGL).  

June 11 between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. for invasive faya tree survey in Kahuku east, mauka, and west units, between 5,000- and 8,000-ft. elevation.

June 17 between 6 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. for ungulate survey in Kahuku between 2,000- and 6,000-ft. elevation; and between 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. for aerial survey, control and eradication of invasive banana poka on Mauna Loa between 3,800- and 6,800-ft. elevation.

June 18 between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. for survey, control and eradication of invasive guinea grass along Keauhou Trail between 77- and 2,400-ft. elevation.

June 23 and 27 between 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. for crew and external sling loads of tools, equipment, camp gear and supplies for fence maintenance and repair to protect ʻuaʻu (Hawaiian petrel) on Mauna Loa between 6,376- and 8,906-ft. elevation.

USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory may conduct additional flight operations over Kīlauea and Mauna Loa to assess volcanic activity and maintain instrumentation. 

The park regrets any noise impact to residents and park visitors. Dates and times are subject to change based on aircraft availability and weather. 

Management of the park requires the use of aircraft to monitor and research volcanic activity, conduct search-and-rescue missions and law enforcement operations, support management of natural and cultural resources, and to maintain backcountry facilities.
