The Halemau`u trailhead parking lot, located at 7990’ elevation in the Summit District
of Haleakalā National Park, will be completely closed to vehicles from Tuesday, June
18 through Tuesday, June 25 for accessibility improvements. Visitors must remove
their vehicles from the Halemau`u parking lot before Tuesday. Leleiwi Overlook will
reopen for parking on Tuesday, June 18.

During the Halemau`u parking lot closure, hikers, cabin users, and campers can be
dropped off or picked up at the hiker pullout near Halemau`u. There is an existing trail
from this pullout to the Halemau`u parking lot. A designated walkway will lead hikers
through the closed parking lot to the Halemau`u trail head.

Alternatively, back country visitors can park at the Supply Trail trailhead near
Hosmer’s Grove, at 7000’ elevation. The Supply Trail is a 2.2 mile long trail that
connects to the Halemau`u Trail. Another option is to park at the Haleakalā Visitor
Center, at 9740 feet, and use the Sliding Sands Trail to access the crater. Please call
808-572-4400 for help in planning your back country hike.

Accessibility improvement work in the summit area of Haleakalā is scheduled through
September 2013. Visitors and residents should expect continued heavy construction
traffic on Haleakalā Highway and Crater Road. For the latest updates please check
