National Park Service set to revitalize scenic vistas on George Washington Memorial Parkway

MCLEAN, VA – The National Park Service (NPS) is set to restore scenic vistas along the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Supported by the Great American Outdoors Act, the project will rehabilitate 15 historic views between North Donaldson Overlook and Spout Run Parkway, allowing visitors to enjoy the iconic scenery of the route once again. 
 
Restoring the views 
Overgrown trees, primarily non-native and invasive species, have obstructed some of the parkway's views over time. The Park Service will selectively clear about 3 acres of these trees to reopen views of the Potomac River and surrounding landscapes. 
 
Replanting with native trees 
In keeping with its commitment to environmental stewardship, the Park Service will replant areas with native species, including tulip poplars, oaks, and red maples. The replanting effort aims to enhance the park's natural beauty and support its ecological health. 
 
Minimizing disruptions 
Temporary northbound lane closures will be in effect on select weekends to ensure safety while the work is underway. Park Service staff will monitor the project to protect the surrounding environment and minimize impacts on visitors. Specific dates and detour information will be announced in advance. 
 
A renewed experience 
The project will restore scenic vistas that have been lost over the years, ensuring future generations can enjoy the same views that have inspired visitors for decades.
