Fewer lanes and more slowdowns on George Washington Memorial Parkway

WASHINGTON - As part of the ongoing rehabilitation of Windy Run Bridge, the National Park Service will temporarily reduce the number of lanes on the George Washington Memorial Parkway beginning on Monday, July 30.

 

“Drivers should expect a lower speed limit, narrower lanes and a substantial police presence until this fall,” park superintendent Alexcy Romero said.“We need to shift traffic so that workers can safely rehabilitate the road surface of Windy Run Bridge.”

 

As part of this work, we will:

• Lower the work zone speed limit to 35 miles per hour at all times

• Reduce the number of travel lanes to three near and over Windy Run Bridge

• Direct all traffic into three narrow travel lanes on one side of the median

• Shift travel lanes to accommodate rush hour traffic
   

There will always be one southbound lane and one northbound lane open. The third lane will be reversible to accommodate morning and evening rush hours. The reversible lane will be northbound from noon to 8 p.m. and be southbound from 8 p.m. to noon. On Saturdays and Sundays the reversible lane will be southbound.

 

U.S. Park Police officers will temporarily stop traffic in both directions to make sure traffic shifts safely. Drivers should exercise extreme caution and expect to see U.S. Park Police officers and construction workers in the road 30 minutes before and after the scheduled times for traffic shifts.

 

We planned this repair work to happen in summer when traffic volumes on the George Washington Memorial Parkway are lighter. The work will end this fall. Find more information at go.nps.gov/windyrun.
