Throughout the month of March, Guilford Courthouse National Military Park will celebrate the 245th anniversary of the Revolutionary War battle with educational programming and special events.
“The battle anniversary provides the opportunities for celebrating, commemorating and contemplating the meanings of the words in the Declaration of Independence and their relevance to our lives today,” said Aaron LaRocca, superintendent of Guilford Courthouse National Military Park.

Descendants of Battle Veterans Symposium

The park will host the Descendants of Battle Veterans Symposium on March 14 at 10 a.m. in the visitor center theater. Descendants of five Guilford Courthouse veterans will share how research into their ancestor’s military service has deepened their understanding of the past and their families. Descendants of Guilford Courthouse veterans are encouraged to attend and connect with fellow descendants.
“This symposium provides a unique occasion for visitors to explore the unique circumstances that inspired service during the American Revolution and the Battle of Guilford Courthouse,” said LaRocca.

Revolutionary Lecture Series

The annual Revolutionary Lecture Series will feature three speakers:
  • March 7: Dr. Alexander S. Burns, Infantry in Battle
  • March 21: Ranger Jason Baum, Hessians in the American Revolution
  • March 28: Colonel Seanegan Sculley, Contest for Liberty: Military Leadership in the Continental Army, 1775-1783
Lectures will occur at 4 p.m. in the visitor center. All programs are free and do not require advance registration.

Sons of American Revolution Commemorate Battle

On March 15, the Sons of the American Revolution have their annual observation of the battle anniversary at 11 a.m. at the Nathanael Greene Monument. Their program includes speeches and wreath layings from SAR chapters across the state.

Battle Reenactment

The battle reenactment will be held at Country Park, part of Greensboro Parks and Recreation, at 2 p.m. on March 14 and 15.

Other Battle Anniversary Programming

On March 14 and 15, visitors can connect with the history of the era through artillery and musket demonstrations, performances by the Carolina Colonial Dancers and interactive programs on colonial music, medicine and Revolutionary War pensions.

Additional information about the battle anniversary events can be found on the park’s event calendar.

Guilford Courthouse National Military Park is the site of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. In 1917, the park was established as the first Revolutionary War site designated by the federal government.
