Guilford Courthouse Seeks Citizen Scientists to Identify Aquatic Species at Weekend Bio-Blitz

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Guilford Courthouse National Military Park invites the public to participate in a Bio-Blitz from Sept. 12 to 13. Citizen scientists will use iNaturalist to identify aquatic and semi-aquatic species including fish, aquatic insects, freshwater mussels, amphibians, reptiles and crustaceans that live in the park’s creeks and springs. This Bio-Blitz will help the park create a species list, better understand biodiversity, make informed management decisions and strengthen the community's connection to nature. 

“No matter what your skill level, there's a place for you at the Bio-Blitz,” said Superintendent Aaron LaRocca. “It's a hands-on way to explore the outdoors while contributing valuable information to the park.” 

Participants must be at least 16 years old and able to walk through wooded areas and creeks. An adult must accompany all individuals under 18 years old.  

The park recommends participants attend a Bio-Blitz training meeting on Sept. 9 from 6 to 7 p.m. to learn about the project and methodology.  

Participating individuals should arrive at 8:30 a.m. for both days of the event. The park will conduct the Bio-Blitz from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days, with an hour-long break for lunch. All participants must fill out National Park Service volunteer paperwork upon arrival at the park on the first day of the event.

About Guilford Courthouse National Military Park: Established in 1917, Guilford Courthouse National Military Park was the first Revolutionary War site designated by the federal government. An important historic and community asset in Greensboro, North Carolina, the park includes a collection of sites with a rich history related to the largest, hotly contested battle of the Revolutionary War’s climactic Southern Campaign. Today, the park protects 255 acres of approximately 1,000 acres of the actual battlefield.
