Starting June 1 National Park Service (NPS) contractors will be onsite at the Great Kills Park during two different mobilizations conducting field activities associated with the NPS Comprehensive Environmental, Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) Remedial Investigation (RI).
WHAT: RI Field Investigation Activities
WHERE: Great Kills Park, Operational Unit 2, Staten Island, NY
WHEN: June 1-July 16, 2021 andAugust 16 – November 1, 2021
WHO: Gateway National Recreation Area
NOTE: During the investigation, NPS contractors will collect surface and subsurface soil samples, install and sample groundwater monitoring wells, collect surface water and sediment samples, and further evaluate potential radiological contamination in the OU2 area.
The portions of OU2 that are currently open to the public (Bulkhead Road) will remain open during the investigation activities. An exclusion zone will be established around active collection samples. Increased traffic and activity along Bulkhead Road is expected during field investigation activities.
