Middletown, N.J. –By the Sea an exhibit of paintings by Gregory Lewis, will open on Saturday, June 3. The exhibit opening and reception will be from 1 pm – 4 pm at the Fort Hancock Post Museum (Building 28) at Sandy Hook. The opening reception is free and open to the public.

Inspired by the magical light reflected from the ocean, painter Gregory Lewis finds Sandy Hook, a special place a place surrounded by water, “as if I’m sitting on a small island. As I paint in this special light, it transports me to a better place.”

Lewis began his painting career as a decorative artist and faux finisher and has spent years producing commissioned works for residential and commercial spaces. “But the projects I found most fulfilling were the ones that brought me closer to true fine art, like murals, Trompe l’oeil, and restoration work on existing paintings. Several years ago, these projects inspired me to start painting on canvas and I haven’t stopped.”

The common thread in many of my pieces is this commanding fascination with natural sunlight.“My fascination with light and shadow started with the discovery and respect of two great artists, Edward Hopper and Winslow Homer.”

This exhibit will be on display through Labor Day. The Post Museum is open on weekends from 1 pm to 5 pm. There is no fee to visit the Fort Hancock area of Sandy Hook.
