Thank you to all who provided input in the naming of the northern unit of First State National Historical Park. Your comments were very important in our decision making process.

After a thorough review of all comments, the National Park Service has decided to name the northern unit of the park Brandywine Valley. To ensure we continue to honor the local heritage associated with the name Beaver Valley, we will find ways to include it in interpretive and educational signage and materials. This decision was based on strong public support for this solution, as well as the national significance of the name Brandywine Valley. The park's Historic Resource Study states that the northern unit of the park "derives its national significance from its exceptional 'preservation of the cultural landscape of the Brandywine Valley' (2013 establishment of First State National Monument) representing some of the earliest 'English settlement of the Colony of Delaware and portions of the Colony of Pennsylvania' (2015 legislation creating the First State National Historical Park)."
