New Castle, DE – First State National Historical Park, in partnership with the Delaware Division of
Historical and Cultural Affairs, is initiating an archaeological investigation prior to the final planning for
the rehabilitation of the Sheriff’s House and the adjacent exterior perimeter as the park’s new office and
visitor center.
Ahead of this rehabilitation work, an archaeological investigation will be undertaken to identify buried
cultural resources within the project area, such as the remains of buildings or concentrations of artifacts.
This investigation will involve extensive background research and the manual excavation of test holes. If
significant archaeological features are identified, the proposed impact on these will be avoided or
mitigated.
The archaeological survey will be conducted by professional archaeologists from EAC/Archaeology, with
oversite from the National Park Service and the State of Delaware. Archaeological testing will begin
within the next two to six weeks, and last approximately one to two weeks. The public is welcome to stop
by and see what evidence of the past is being uncovered.
