ANNISTON, AL – Freedom Riders National Monument (FRRI) and Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument (BICR) have partnered to produce a new podcast, titled “We Will Rise: National Parks and Civil Rights.” The podcast premieres on May 26.

“We Will Rise: National Parks and Civil Rights” podcast episodes will explore the relationship between the United State’s public lands and civil rights history. While many often refer to the preservation of the country’s wild places in national parks as “America’s Best Idea,” the National Park Service system also preserves spaces of remembrance. “We Will Rise” will bring Park Rangers, researchers, authors, and civil rights activists into conversation around these important topics.

The first episode of “We Will Rise: National Parks and Civil Rights” features Freedom Rider Charles Person in conversation with Comedy Central comedian and Birmingham native Roy Wood, Jr. Person and Wood, Jr. discuss Person’s experiences as a Freedom Rider, the impacts of the 1960s era of the civil rights movement, and much more. The podcast’s first episode was sponsored by Freedom Riders Park, Inc and produced in partnership with Jacksonville State University and the Birmingham Public Library.

To listen, visit BICR’s website (https://www.nps.gov/bicr/learn/photosmultimedia/podcast.htm). A video recording of the conversation is available through Jacksonville State University.
