The National Park Service at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site will be presenting the annual Summer's End Promenade on Saturday, September 26, 2015 between 1 pm and 3 pm, as part of the national park's celebration of Public Lands Day. Vintage Base Ball Returns to Fort Vancouver National Historic Site on July 25
The National Park Service at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site will host its popular evening of 1860s vintage base ball at 6:00 pm on Saturday, July 25, 2015, on the national park’s historic Parade Ground. This event is a fun, free, and fantastic opportunity to travel back in time to 1867 to experience "base ball" (then two words) at its infancy, with costumed players and supporters, a brass band concert, and a mountain howitzer firing to start the game.

National Park Service Announces Award of Major Rehabilitation Work at Vancouver Barracks
Superintendent Tracy Fortmann announced today that the National Park Service (NPS) has awarded a $11.28 million contract to Pacific Tech Construction, Inc. of Kelso, Washington, to rehabilitate utility infrastructure and historic buildings at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, two of which will serve as the new home of the Forest Supervisor’s Headquarters of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

In support of local students and in celebration of Vancouver's historical diversity, the National Park Service and the Evergreen and Vancouver School Districts are proud to again host the 12th annual Children's Culture Parade at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site on Friday, May 29, 2015. The Children's Culture Parade begins at 10:15 am at the national park's Pearson Air Museum (1115 E. Fifth Street, Vancouver, WA 98661) and continues north on E. A new National Park Service (NPS) report shows that 803,739 visitors to Fort Vancouver National Historic Site in 2014 spent over $45 million in communities near the park. That spending supported 766 jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $64.8 million.

National Park Service Invites Submissions of Concepts for Re-use of 2 Historic Buildings at Vancouver Barracks
Superintendent Tracy Fortmann announced today that the National Park Service at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site has opened two Requests for Expression of Interest (RFEIs) and is inviting submissions of concepts that would renovate and re-use two historic buildings in the national park's Vancouver Barracks complex. These concepts will be used to guide the Requests for Proposals for the buildings' re-use.

Fort Vancouver NHS Designated Official Center of Refuge for Zombie Apocalypse
Today, Superintendent Tracy Fortmann announced that Fort Vancouver National Historic Site has been designated as an official Center of Refuge (CoR) for a Zombie Apocalypse (ZA). “With sharp, 15-foot palisade walls protecting a functioning well, open space, and buildings with core emergency functions, Fort Vancouver makes an ideal location for surviving a Zombie Apocalypse,” reads the official certificate which the park has been informed is “in the mail” to park headquarters.

Fort Vancouver National Historic Site Proposes Entrance Fee Increase
Fort Vancouver National Historic Site is soliciting public comments via the National Park Service (NPS) public comment website (PEPC) and US Mail concerning possible fee increases in 2015 and 2016. Under the park’s proposal, the entrance fee to the reconstructed stockade site would change from $3 to $5 in 2015 and $7 in 2016 for an individual, and would remain valid for reentrance for seven days. The park’s annual pass would increase from $10 to $30 in 2015, and would continue to allow admittance of four adults.

National Park Service Announces Major Rehabilitation Work at Vancouver Barracks
The National Park Service is pleased to announce its first major construction project that will take place at Vancouver Barracks, a new integral part of Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. This multi-million dollar and multi-faceted project will include rehabilitation of several buildings including building 987, a 33,000 sf historic double-barracks, building 404 a modern 5,000 sf maintenance building, phase I utility replacement, as well as the exterior rehabilitation of two additional large double-barracks, 989 and 993.

NPS to Host "Campfires and Candlelight at Fort Vancouver" on Sept 13
On September 13, the National Park Service at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site will host the Campfires and Candlelight signature community event for the 31th consecutive year. This interactive, living history event, first staged in 1983, features costumed staff and more than 150 volunteers in encampments and re-enactments on the grounds and inside the buildings of the reconstructed Hudson's Bay Company fort at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.

The National Park Service (NPS) has awarded a $1.7 million contract to DSL Builders, LLC of Salem, Oregon to rehabilitate the Visitor Center at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. The contract includes the design and construction of the rehabilitation project, which will reconfigure interior space to allow for accessibility, increase educational opportunities and enhance visitor experience.

A new National Park Service (NPS) report shows that 733,539 visitors to Fort Vancouver National Historic Site (NHS) in 2013 spent $40.4 million in communities near the park. That spending supported 610 jobs in the local area. These numbers are all increases over those reported in 2012.

1860s Vintage Base Ball Returns to Fort Vancouver NHS
After a one-year respite, the National Park Service is proud to bring back 1860s vintage base ball to the historic Parade Ground at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site—base ball played according to the rules in place in 1867, by costumed staff and volunteers portraying two of the Pacific Northwest’s first baseball teams, the Occidental Base Ball Club of Vancouver and the Pioneer Base Ball Club of Portland.

NPS Celebrates Legacy of Russian-American Aviation at Pearson Air Museum
Join the National Park Service and friends at Pearson Air Museum at 10:30 am on Saturday, June 21for a special program celebrating the 77th anniversary of Valery Chkalov’s landmark transpolar flight from Moscow, Russia to Pearson Field and its significance to our community. The program will include a talk, vignette, and music, along with artifacts on display from the historic flight. A twenty-piece group from the Vancouver Community Concert Band, under the direction of Dr. Jim Rourk, will provide music from the era. The talk will be presented by Luda Leksunkin, a bilingual Russian-American park guide with the National Park Service at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site.

National Park Service Continues Progress and Innovation at Pearson Air Museum
The National Park Service continues its commitment to the success of Pearson Air Museum , and to working in cooperation with the many volunteers, partners, community leaders, local businesses, and others who desire to protect the nationally-significant resources associated with Pearson Air Museum and to ensure that the aviation history it commemorates is here for future generations to enjoy and explore. The museum continues to be open to the public Wednesday through Saturday, with no admission charge. Last year over 15,000 visitors enjoyed the museum, not including those attending special events. The National Park Service has put together a staffing plan to effectively operate Pearson Air Museum, and has identified a full-time museum manager who will be transitioning into the position in July. More information will be made available next month. In addition, park guides and additional volunteer docents will enliven the museum for visitors with guided tours and interactive programs.

NPS Hosts Annual National Get Outdoors Day at Fort Vancouver NHS
National Get Outdoors Day brings community partners together to celebrate healthy, active, outdoor fun at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site on June 14, 2014. The National Park Service’s annual Brigade Encampment, a component of National Get Outdoors Day, re-enacts the jovial return of the fur brigades to Fort Vancouver – illuminating how day-to-day survival skills of trappers in the 1840s have become recreational pursuits today, and how our relationships to the natural world have changed over time.

NPS Visitor Center to be Improved
The National Park Service has authorized funding for a project to rehabilitate the existing 5,650 SF Visitor Center built in 1962. A national model when it first opened to the public, in more recent years the historic Mission 66-style building has been in need of major upgrades. This historic rehabilitation will be confined to the existing footprint of the building and will address essential upgrades to protect the health and safety of visitors, improve efficiency of space while improving the appearance of the structure to make it more readily identifiable by the public as a public facility.

A study by Michigan State University for the National Park Service shows that in 2011 the 710,439 visitors to Fort Vancouver National Historic Site spent $37,610,000 in communities surrounding the park. This spending supported 613 jobs in the local area.

Fort Vancouver National Historic Site Reopens to Visitors
Fort Vancouver National Historic Site re-opens to visitors today. Visitors can again access the national park’s public areas, roads, facilities, and public services during regularly scheduled hours of operation. Along with the 400 other units of the national park system, Fort Vancouver National Historic Site has been closed since October 1 due to the lapse in Congressional appropriations.

National Park Service Continues Preservation Efforts at Vancouver Barracks with Historic Post Headquarters Project
The National Park Service has announced that additional historic preservation efforts have begun at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, the only national park in the Portland-Vancouver Metro Area. This week, National Park Service staff have begun overseeing the repainting and re-roofing of the historic Post Headquarters building (Building 991) within Vancouver Barracks.

Fort Vancouver National Historic Site Celebrates Youth by Hosting Community's 11th Annual Children's Cultural Parade
This year, the National Park Service and Evergreen and Vancouver Public Schools continue to bring the community’s annual Children’s Cultural Parade to Fort Vancouver National Historic Site to celebrate the diversity of Vancouver. The parade is the culminating event of classroom instruction in which local third grade students study cultures from around the world. It is an opportunity for each student to explore his or her own unique cultural heritage and to celebrate the heritage of classmates.

Talk to Explore the Pacific Northwest in the Civil War Era
In this year that the National Park Service is commemorating the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War, Chief Ranger Greg Shine will describe the interesting role the Northwest played -- not only because its states and territories were part of the ongoing battle over freedom and slavery -- but also because of the army's particular relationship with the region's Native American groups. Shine will also detail the significance of Fort Vancouver leading up to and and during the war and the people and events of this region that influenced its outcome.
