National Park Service Recreates Surrender of Union Garrison at Fort Sumter on 150th Anniversary

WHAT: Fort Sumter National Monument is commemorating the 150th anniversary of the surrender of Fort Sumter on April 14, 1861 with a commemorative recreation of the surrender of the Union garrison. The event will include recreations of the lowering of the United States flag and the raising of the Palmetto Guard, South Carolina state, and 1st National Confederate flags; the departure of the Union garrison; and the Confederate forces taking control of the fort. Fort Sumter National Monument Park Historian Rick Hatcher will provide historical background and narration of the event.

WHEN: Thursday, April 14, 2011. Program starts at 3:15 p.m.; boat transportation to Fort Sumter departs at 2:00 p.m.

HOW: Boat transportation will be provided for media to Fort Sumter at 2:15 p.m. from Fort Moultrie (1214 Middle Street, Sullivan’s Island). The boat will return to Fort Moultrie at approximately 4:00 p.m. RSVP is required to secure a position on the boat, as space is limited. Please be prepared to provide the number of cameras, reporters, and gear. Call 843-883-3123, ext. 19 to reserve space on the boat.
