On Saturday, July 22, the park will be hosting a free Unsung Hero Day event at the reconstructed fort. The event highlights some of the skilled professionals whose expertise was essential to the outcome of the 1777 Siege of Fort Stanwix/Schuyler. The event is free, and runs from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, with demonstrations by metalsmiths and surgeons and hands on experiences appropriate for all ages taking place throughout the day.
“An often-overlooked part of military life is the work of the army tradesmen,” said Park Ranger William Sawyer, “These people helped clothe the soldiers and ensured they had the equipment needed to do their jobs. Though they worked behind the scenes, they were as critical as the soldiers defending the walls of the fort.”
The next event taking place at Fort Stanwix is “Honor America Day” on Saturday, July 29. The next Unsung Hero Day event takes place on Saturday, August 6. A full schedule of park events can be found on www.nps.gov/fost. All park events are free.
Fort Stanwix National Monument is open seven days a week from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission to the park is free. For more information about upcoming events please call the park at (315) 338-7730.
