Throughout the summer, Fort Stanwix National Monument will be hosting a series of ranger-led bicycle tours.  The series begins on Sunday, July 1 at 9:30 a.m., with a 12 mile round-trip ride from Bellamy Harbor Park in Rome, NY. The trip will continue down the Erie Canal Trail before heading to Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site for a special program on nature and wildlife. The tour will conclude around 11:30 a.m. back at Bellamy Harbor Park.

On Saturday, July 15 at 1 p.m., a historic cemetery tour will begin at the park visitor center.
It will last about an hour and a half and will take place on both city streets and local trails. The Rome Cemetery will be a featured location during the ride.

Enjoy history, nature, and the arts from the seat of your bike! Now that summer is in full swing,
a bike ride is the perfect way to see some of the local sites and scenes,” said Ranger Dan Umstead, “The park is happy to provide this unique experience for visitors who might not otherwise have a chance to explore on their own.” Participants are encouraged to wear their helmet and bring water, bug spray, and sunscreen.

Due to the terrain and distances, these rides are recommended for those ages 16 and older. These events are free of charge, but do require a reservation. Call 315-338-7730 to reserve a slot and for more information. For those who don’t own a bike but would still like to participate, they can take advantage of the Rome Bike Share Program available at the Fort Stanwix (Willett Center) station, the
Chestnut Street Trail (Mohawk River Trail) station, and the Bellamy Harbor Park station.  For more information on the Rome Bike Share Program and bike station locations visit zagster.com/rome.

The next date in the series is Saturday, August 18. Others will be announced shortly.  A full schedule of park events can be found on www.nps.gov/fost. All park events are free.
